    THE REGIMENTAL ACCOUNT BOOK OF JOHN KELLY, 1832 to 1847
    vellum wrap-around cover over 32 printed pages which have been partially filled-out by hand. Kelly, a 4 foot, 10 inch tall musician from Kent, enlisted in the 51st Regiment of Foot in 1832 while it was stationed at Corfu in the Ionian Islands. He was 13 years and 6 months old. He later travelled to Van Diemens Land, arriving in July 1838. He married Matilda Ann at Hobart Town in June 1843 where their child Sarah was born in March 1845. Kelly, his wife and child were transferred to Madras in October 1846 and their son, John William was born at Poonamallee (India) in December that year. The record ends with Kelly’s death there in January 1847 but no cause of death is recorded.
  • Notes:
    The 51st Regiment of Foot travelled to Australia in detachments as escorts to prisoners in 1837 and 1838, and then moved on to India in 1846.
