MAWSON, Sir Douglas [1882 - 1958] The Home of the Blizzard. Being the Story of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914
[London William Heinemann 1915 - 1st Edition. xxx,349;xiii,338pp.] Two volumes. Quarto. Original decorated blue cloth with two photogravure plates (frontispieces), eighteen colour plates, B&W plates from photos, illustrations (including maps), and three folding maps in rear pocket of volume II. A much superior set than is normally found. Account of the 1911-14 Australian Antarctic Expedition led by Douglas Mawson. The expedition discovered 1,320 miles of land, including the Mertz, Denman, and Scott Glaciers; the Davis Sea; and mapped 800 miles of coastline between Gaussberg and Cape Adare, along Adelie Land coast and beyond. Following an accident, Mawson and one other man attempted to return to base, having to eat some of their dogs on the way. Eventually Mawson was forced to travel the final 100 miles alone and arrived after the ship had left. He and six others spent another winter exploring and finally arrived home in December 1913. His work helped to more accurately fix Magnetic South. This is the scarce first edition of his account of that expedition.
