  • Notes:
Frederick Richard Simms (1863-1944), an Englishman born in Hamburg, Germany was an inventor, engineer and businessman who met Gottlieb Daimler (1834-1900) in 1888. From 1890 – 1892 Simms sat on the board of Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft which eventually led to his formation of the Daimler Motor Company in Coventry in January 1896. The first cars produced by Britain’s oldest car company actually had no connection with German Daimlers but were front engine cars similar to the French Panhard. Daimler quickly established its own identity and produced some remarkable early cars and during WW1 built a variety of vehicles including ambulances, lorries, aero-engines and even complete aircraft. By 1927, Daimler had come up with a striking V12 model, the Double Six which had a 7126cc V12 engine. In 1930 Daimler took over Lanchester. This led to Royal approval for Daimler with King George VI ordering ten 4.5 litre straight 8 engined cars in 1934-35. The King, being a previous Lanchester owner, however had four of them delivered with Lanchester radiators and bonnets. ‘Lanchesterised’ Daimlers were also popular with Indian Maharajahs such as the Jam Sahib of Nawanagar. Later Daimlers in the 1950s also found royal approval with customers including the Emperor of Ethiopia; the Queen of the Netherlands; Prince Rainier of Monaco and the Kings of Afghanistan and Thailand, all purchasers of Daimler DE36s. The sale of Daimler in June 1960 to Jaguar meant that the last individual Daimler was the DS420 limousine in 1968, though this too had a Jaguar engine. Since this time all Daimlers have been variants of Jaguar models. Refined and comfortable and technically identical to the Jaguar, in appearance the more exclusive Daimler could be distinguished by its traditional Daimler fluted grill. The body and interior trimming of the Daimler was finished by coachbuilders Vanden Plas in an association which went back to before WW2. Originating in Belgium in 1884, Vanden Plas was itself to become part of the British Leyland group from 1970 on. This 1976 Daimler Vanden Plas is believed to have originally been the vehicle of the wife of the Right Honourable Lord Provost of Edinburgh. The car was purchased in London in 1978 and transported to Australia by the then owner who kept the vehicle until his death in October 2015. It is known from the owner’s daughter that the car was meticulously maintained throughout this period. The interior leather was replaced, and the 4.2 litre engine re-conditioned, along with servicing to the air-conditioning and an upgrade to the thermostatic fans. This stunning example, in striking Silver Sand metallescent livery with obligatory black vinyl roof trim, the same as used on the Daimler sales brochure cover. With luxurious Chamois trim colour hi-grade hide interior, it has been meticulously maintained and is now ready for just its fourth custodian. This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
