    1935 Triumph 548CC Side-Valve Model 5/1
    Frame No: S 4566; Engine No: S6 3534
  • Notes:
Triumph launched an impressive range of single-cylinder sporting and commuter motorcycles through the 1930s in both side-valve and overhead-valve construction. The former was launched at the 1933 Olympia Show for the 1934 season and remained largely unchanged for the following 2 years. This range of single-cylinder machines consisted of 250, 350 and 500cc capacity bikes. Chief designer Val Page insisted on integrated parts and commonality in the specifications amongst the various capacity models. But this production strategy wasn’t cost effective, so during 1935 when Ariel bought the manufacturing rights to Triumph motorcycles, the managing director moved head designer at Ariel, Edward Turner, to rectify the problems. This insightful move saw Val Page transfer to BSA and design the wonderful M20, which underpinned the war effort for the British, and develop the “Turner” Tiger vertical twin Triumphs. Both men are absolute legends for their contribution to motorcycling. A production run of a mere 600-800 of the 548cc version is believed to have been built and sold. It has a 4-speed hand shift gearbox and a Lucas 6-volt Magdyno lighting system with an electric horn. It was built as a “sturdy” and powerful machine for use as a solo or with a sidecar. It is powered by a side-valve 548cc motor in a duplex cradle type frame using a dry sump lubrication system. It bears the period taper drawn tube front forks with 7” diameter brakes with 19” Dunlop steel wheel rims. This example was comprehensively and sensitively restored in 1984 after it was purchased from the South Australian mid northern region. It was last started about 3 years ago and has been stored ever since. The fuel tank, although structurally sound, is crusty looking on the inside with rusty fuel deposits and varnish. It will need cleaning and or re sealing before use. This absolute classic Val Page era side-valve single represents the end of an era and the start of a new age for Triumph and would proudly fit into any discerning Triumph enthusiast’s collection. This motorcycle will be sold unregistered.
