    A George III sterling silver circular naval presentation punch bowl by John Emes, London 1803
    with stiff leaf rims and bands of grape vines engraved: “The Ship ‘Juno’ of Liverpool, Commanded by Capn. Lutwidge Affleck, of Eighteen Guns 6 Pounders and 44 Men being captured off the Coast of North America, on the 14th of August 1803, by the French Frigate La Poursuivante, of twenty two 24 Pounders, Twelve 9 Pounders and 330 Men, after a well fought Battle The Underwriters of London present Capn. Affleck, with this Token of their Estimation of his Skill and Bravery in maintaining a long and gallant Action with a Ship of such superior Force” and a later engraved presentation on the base for the bowl to be used as a font for a Christening

  • Notes:
    Juno was a 16-gun privateer from Liverpool commanded by Master Lutwidge Affleck. On the 14th of August she fell in with and engaged the French 44-gun frigate “Poursuivante” off Wilmington. After a two hour engagement, in which two crew were killed, several wounded and the ship much shattered, Juno’s colours were hauled down, and Affleck take upon the French ship, where the French commander expressed his surprise that he had fought so long against such a superior force. Later in the “Advertiser”, it was reported, “This brilliant action reflects immortal honour on Captain Affleck and his brave crew, and will no doubt meet that admiration and applause, we conceive they are so well entitled to”. In 1805, the Underwriters of Liverpool “beg leave to enclose a Bill for the sum of £120..this money may be employed in the purchase of a suitable piece of plate”
