• Notes:
  Thomas Griffiths Wainewright was born in Richmond near London. After a childhood reared by his extended family he took up the study of painting with Thomas Phillips and John Linnell, both established portraitists. Linnell was also a well known portrait miniaturist. This training set him up with a love of painting which saw him through his trials and tribulations. He was convicted of forgery and transported to Hobart in 1837. He painted many portraits there and died ten years later having been finally pardoned.
