  • Notes:
Drawing is the art of being able to leave an accurate record of the experience of what one isn't, of what one doesn't know. If one of the purposes of life is to know one self, then a great deal of time is spent investigating things one already knows. So a great drawing is either confirming beautifully what is commonplace, or probing authoritatively the unknown.'"Brett Whiteley, Tangiers notebook 1 Brett Whiteley spent his life investigating. In particular he constantly worked on his drawing skills. The elegance of his mark making is summed up in the line of the telegraph wires leading the viewer naturally into the dense detail of the hillside. Once there the dripping paint from the hilltop lighthouse draws you back into the main body of the work again. The delicate dark detail of the land is offset by his spare, gentle and sensuous rendition of the sea. A glorious narrative is created by the winding road and mountain curving alongside the pale seascape. His innate confidence as an artist shows in these later works where his consummate ability as a draughtsman combines masterfully with his vision of the world. 1 McGrath, Sandra, Brett Whiteley, Bay Books Sydney, 1979, pg 216."
