  • Notes:
This is the last of a small series of large, confident paintings done in Nelson in 1971 which mark the apogee and end of Scott 's Pop period. There is no deep symbolism here: the dinosaur, bomber turrets and bomb were images used by an older painter acquaintance in Auckland, while the strawberry and roughcast white sections reflect Scott 's horticultural environment and the cladding of his flat in Nelson, where he was teaching at the time. Simulated stucco was also used in Teller. There was a strong sense of arrested movement, of dynamic forms locked up, which is a feature of the later lattices. Scott was seeking, as always, new possibiliities for development, and works such as this seem capable of sustaining a whole series. Perhaps unfortunately, Scott 's dissatifaction with full-time teaching caused him to pack up and return to Auckland, where his painting took quite a different turn. Excerpt taken from Brown, Warwick Ian Scott. Marsden Press, Auckland 1998, p 68.
