    1930 ESSEX SUPER SIX SEDAN
Chassis No: 1191014. Engine No: H4P765194D
  • Notes:
The Essex was produced by the Essex Motor Company between 1918 and 1922 and by Hudson between 1922 and 1933. These cars were designed to suit the budget of the average family. The Essex proved so durable and good value for money they were utilised by the United States Postal Service. The early Essexes also competed successfully in hill climbs and Glen Shultz won the 1923 Pikes Peak in a specially built competition version. In 1922, a closed coach model was introduced proving very popular and while Henry Ford is credited with inventing the affordable car, it was Essex that made the enclosed car approachable for the medium market. By 1928, 14” 4-wheel drum brakes as well as extremely strong piano hinged doors were introduced. The exterior body lines are remarkable and the suicide doors make a grand interior entrance. In 1932, a new car was launched under the name of the Essex-Terraplane, a play on the word aeroplane, which now identifies the Hudson marque. The L-head 160-cid 6-cylinder Super Six was the first engine built by Hudson. At the height of Hudson’s production in 1929, Hudson and Essex combined had produced 300,000 cars in one year, including output from factories abroad. This rare right-hand drive example was purchased at auction by Clem Smith in 2009. It was purportedly brought in from America in 1999 and resided in Victoria. The car had been fully restored and lavishly trimmed in mohair at a cost of some $3000 at the time. Finished in cream and tan, the design and embellishment of this charming car is typically art nouveau and charming in every way. The odometer reads 43,102 miles approx. The sale is accompanied by an Essex Super Six instruction manual for 1930. This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
