  • Notes:
Clearly evolved from the Aston Martin DB4, and legendary DB5 made famous by James Bond 007, the new model DB6 was announced at the London Motor Show in October 1965. The most noticeable styling changes on the DB6 were the Kamm tail rear spoiler, which improved high speed stability, the split front and rear bumpers; a redesigned oil cooler aperture in the front valance, a higher roof line (136 cm) and longer wheelbase (258.5 cm), 9.5 cm more than the DB5, giving an overall length of 462 cm. Whilst still a high powered sporting grand tourer, with a top speed of 148 mph and 0-60 mph in 6.1 seconds, the increase of space in the rear made the DB6 a more practical family proposition. It may be an apocryphal story, but, according to Aston Martin, at a business function in London in 1968, David Brown was approached by an old contact and friend, who asked him if it would be possible to purchase a new DB6 at cost price as a favour. David Brown replied that he would be delighted to oblige, and several days later the friend received an invoice for £1000 more than the published list price for the car, which was 4,998 pounds sterling when new. Embellished story or not, it is certainly true that in this era, craftsmanship took priority over profit. The DB6 was a highly fashionable car to be seen in, famous owners including HRH Prince Charles, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Twiggy and Peter Sellers. In August 1969, a revised Mk2 version of the DB6 was launched with subtle flares to the wheel arches and wider tyres. Between 1965 and 1970, before it was replaced by the DBS, alongside which it was produced concurrently from 1967, just 1,788 DB6 cars were built in total. Of this number there were just 46 cars built to DB6 Mk 2 Vantage specification. This 1970 Aston Martin DB6 Mk2 Vantage was delivered new to Ireland, from whence it went to New Zealand before arriving in Australia when in 1977 it was registered as PUW-466 to W.H.Carr in Indooroopilly in Queensland. In 1978 it was purchased from airline pilot, Col Haywood of Balwyn by the current owners with its existing registration plate IWX-747. Between 1978 and 1990 this DB6 was driven regularly from its home in Hawthorn to work at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Its routine maintenance and servicing was carried out in the workshop at Hawthorn. Due to increased work and family commitments and increased town traffic and with some work required to the DB6 it was decided to take the car off the road. In 2005 the decision was made to make the car road worthy once more after 15 years of inactivity. Rather than undergo a full restoration the decision was made to bring the car back to its usable original condition prior to storage. After a careful inspection of the engine, drive train and braking system had been undertaken, the following scope of works was carried out: The engine was meticulously dismantled, machined and reassembled with new bearings seals gaskets etc, during this process the cylinder head was also converted to run on unleaded fuel; Brake callipers and master cylinder were rebuilt with new seals flexible hoses etc; Tyres replaced; Exhaust system replaced; An assortment of smaller jobs as per the accompanying parts receipts were also made good. At the same time the lower section of the rear seat was replaced by expert trimmer, Gary Blackman, on account of moth damage to the original leather. All the work was completed by 2007, since when this highly authentic DB6 still in its original Silver Birch with black leather interior has been used only on special occasions and in good weather, travelling approximately 500 miles. Its period off the road has meant that this is a very low mileage and highly original and authentic example, just one of 46, of the rare and most desirable Aston Martin DB6 Mk2 Vantage. It is accompanied by its original service book, and build documentation from the Aston Martin Lagonda Goldcrest system provided by factory Aston Martin approved heritage specialists Aston Service Dorset, UK.
