  In 1965, Harry Webster, Standard-Triumph's Director of Engineering & Development was given a directive and as a consequence he commissioned Italian coach builder Vignale's Chief Stylist, Giovanni Michelotti to do a styling exercise, based on the Triumph 2000, prior to the forthcoming Turin Motor Show. The agreement was that if Webster liked what Michelotti produced, Standard-Triumph could have first refusal on the concept and it would be excluded from the Turin Show. Out of this arrangement the Stag was born. This original concept for the Stag was in development for two years and it took a further two years to reach fruition due to financial issues following the merger between Leyland Motors and B.M.H. which become British Leyland in 1968. Engine development went through several incarnations including the straight 6-cylinder engine of the Triumph 2000 saloon, but the final result was the specially developed Triumph V8 3.0 litre power unit, exclusively used in the Stag. Essentially, this engine was developed from two banked 4-cylinder Triumph Dolomite blocks developed for the Saab 99. By this time Harry Webster had been moved to the Austin-Morris Division and the indomitable engineer, Spen King, was seconded from Rover to further develop the Stag. King's quest for more bhp and lower end torque resulted in the increase of the V8 from 2.5-litres to 3-litres and a move back to carburettor aspiration from fuel injection, which would have ultimately been problematic with US emission standards. By the launch in 1970, the technical advancements were plentiful, including independent suspension front and rear; servo-assisted disc/drum brakes; power steering and electric windows as standard. The production model featured a 4-speed manual with overdrive, originally an option as the Borg-Warner 3-speed automatic box was. With its refined styling by Giovanni Michelotti; distinctive roll-over bar and hard and soft top options, the car was widely acclaimed, but unfortunately, it was not a big seller. The Stag underwent a slight upgrade with the Mk II launched in early 1973, differentiated externally by its emblems which changed from a light grey to a black background; the sills and rear number plate panel being in matt black and the clear side panels in the soft top being removed. Internally, the instrument faces were changed and the map reading lamp was removed, the interior lights moved from the 'B' pillar to the centre of the T-bar. The engine had a higher compression ratio along with re-designed pistons and combustion chambers. Only 2,898 cars were built in 1975 and production numbers were down to a mere 1800, in 1977 making this example rare and desirable for the keen buyer of a 1970's V8 British sports car. Imported in to New Zealand from Scotland in January, 1986, this car was first registered to Mr. George Currie of Christchurch with a 21,000kms odometer reading. It was then traded and purchased by Southern Insurance Brokers Ltd, in 1986 with 23,400 kms on the clock. In 1988, it was acquired by Mr. John Longford of Wellington with an odometer reading of 29,600kms and finally acquired by Roy Savage in May, 1992 with 32,250 kms accrued. Finished in white with its original saddle coloured vinyl interior and timber dashboard, this Stag presents in original condition featuring original Smiths gauges and Lucas audio system; spare wheel and tool kit. With its twin Stromberg carburettors this car is one of three excellent examples of the Triumph marque closely held in the Savage Collection having been in this single ownership for 24 years.
