    A magnificent Edward VII gilt sterling silver garniture of a large oval centrepiece, a pair of comports and a pair of vases
    by John Bodman Carrington and Carrington & Co, London 1902/5/6. The centrepiece engraved "Presented to Sir James & Lady Fairfax on their Golden Wedding by their Sons and Daughters - 12th March 1857-1907" and a crest and motto "Lucem Fere Fax" (Carry a Torch), all with pierced lattice body, scroll cartouches supporting bold floral swags, leaf scroll rim with classical Maenad masks and loop handles, all with original painted metal liners and stamped "Carrington 150 Regent St."

    Sir James Reading and Lady Fairfax
  • Notes:
    Sir James Reading Fairfax (1834-1919), newspaper proprietor, arts patron, businessman, philanthropist and yachtsman, was born in Warwickshire, England arrived in Sydney in 1838. At 16 he was apprenticed as a printer at the Sydney Morning Herald, and in 1856 he became a partner in John Fairfax & Sons. James married Lucy Armstrong
