    "OPENING OF THE MELBOURNE EXHIBITION: The Governor of Victoria, Sir H.B.Loch
    Declaring the Exhibition Open in the Queen's Name", 1888 double-page engraving from 'The Illustrated London News', light folds though very fine condition, window mounted, overall 65x51cm.
  • Notes:
    The Centennial International Exhibition of Works of Industry and Art attracted attendance of 2.2 million compared with Victoria's population at the end of 1888 of 1,080,000. The total cost of mounting the Exhibition was £338,027 ($21.6 million) and despite the impressive attendance numbers, it resulted in an operating loss of £237,785 ($15.2 million). The installation of electric lighting by the Australasia Electric Light Power & Storage Co. enabled evening viewing.
