Lot Description:A WW2 period Japanese Gyroscope from a torpedo of a midget submarine, circa 1940
purported to have come from one of the Japanese “Midget Submarines” that attacked Sydney Harbour on 31st May 1942, stamped serial No. 1436

Notes:On the night of May 31st three Japanese midget submarines, each with two crew members and two torpedo tubes entered Sydney Harbour and attempted to sink allied war ships. Two of the midget submarines were detected and attacked before they could successfully engage any allied vessels and the crews of each of the midget submarines committed suicide. The third vessel disappeared not to be seen again until 2006 when divers discovered its wreck off Sydney’s Northern beaches.
