Lot Description:Rowcroft, Charles. Tales of the Colonies, or, The Adventures of an Emigrant
Three volumes, duodecimo, original half cloth (spines with neat repairs), new endpapers. London, Saunders and Otley, 1843. -
Notes:Rare: the first Australian novel to be published in London and the fourth Australian novel overall. This is the so-called “second edition”, actually the second issue of the first edition sheets (of the same year) with new preliminaries, now identifying Rowcroft as the author. The original half-titles in each volume are here replaced by a leaf with closely printed “Opinions of the Press” on both recto and verso. Following an Eton education, Rowcroft emigrated to Hobart in 1821 and took up a 2000-acre land grant and remained in the colony for four years. In this, his first novel, Rowcroft develops “partly a description of life in the colony, partly a guide for intending settlers and partly a sensational tale of the hazards of Van Diemen’s Land in its pioneer time” (Oxford Companion). Ferguson records the Morning Advertiser’s enthusiastic proclamation: “Had DeFoe or Dickens written or imagined them, nothing more extraordinary, entertaining or instructive could have been penned” (Ferguson). Ferguson, 3699; Miller, p. 596; not in Sadleir; Wolff, 5980 (first issue, rebound).
