Lot Description:Thomas, Edmund (illustrated by). Australian Album 1857
Quarto, tinted lithographed title-page and nine tinted lithographs by Edmund Thomas, original gilt-decorated cloth, rebacked in morocco, original silk endpapers, all edges gilt. Sydney, J.R. Clarke, [1856]. -
Notes:First edition of the first music album published in New South Wales: very scarce. The eight pieces of music “are all new – all colonial... We can send the work home as a specimen of what we can do out here at Botany Bay as an index of our education, refinement, art-feeling” (Preface). The book is now valued as much for the justly celebrated lithographs by Edmund Thomas (1827-1867), an artist better known for his 1853-4 series of Melbourne views. Thomas’s elegant depictions of Sydney and environs here include views of the Botanical Gardens, Sydney Heads, Rose Bay, and Sydney from the North Shore. Ferguson, 6318.
