  • Lot Description:
Melbourne Cup. Handasyde, Stewart. Album of Melbourne Cup Winners 1861-98
Oblong octavo, chromolithographed view of the Grand Stand and 20 leaves with chromolithographs of two Cup winners on the recto and advertisements (many in colour) on the verso, bound in modern morocco, ribbon-tied, retaining the pictorial front wrapper (little marked). Melbourne, Mason, Firth & McCutcheon, [1898].
  • Notes:
Rare. Australian books of horse racing interest are surprisingly rare in the colonial period, even the socially important Melbourne Cup, holding as it had for decades an important place in the Australian calendar. Designed and lithographed by Stewart Handasyde, a little-known artist active in Melbourne in the 1890s up to the First World War, this Album of Melbourne Cup Winners is rare today. The cup winners with jockeys up are portrayed within an Australian floral border. Not in Ferguson.
