  • Lot #:

  • Lot Description:
Foster, John Fitzgerald Leslie. The New Colony of Victoria, formerly Port Phillip
Together with some account of the other Australian Colonies. Octavo, original cloth. London, Trelawney Saunders, 1851.
  • Notes:
Only edition of a scarce and informative sketch of Port Phillip in the 1840s, a “well documented account of colonial achievements and prospects, intended as a handbook for prospective colonists and migration agents” (ADB). Foster was later to become one of the scapegoats for Eureka, having lost a political quarrel with (the execrable) Governor Hotham. It has particular historical interest since, having been published on the very eve of the gold rushes, it gives some idea of Victoria’s prospects had that unanticipated bonanza not occurred. Bagnall, 2020; Ferguson, 9701.
