  • Lot Description:
Earp, George Butler. The Gold Colonies of Australia: Comprising their History, Territorial Divisions
Produce, and Capabilities, also, Ample Notice of the Gold Mines, and How to Get to Them, with Every Advice to Emigrants. With a Map. Small octavo, pp. viii, 216, 16 (advertisements), [2] (advertisements) + folding map, fine, partly unopened, copy in original green printed glazed boards. London, George Routledge & Co., 1852.
  • Notes:
Rare first edition of one of the most popular of the gold digger’s guides, with tens of thousands of copies printed over 1852-3, it is based substantially on letters received from the goldfields, many of which are quoted extensively, and on the author’s wide personal experience of the colonies. Public eagerness for news of the goldfields may be gauged by remarks printed in the first and second issues of the expanded second edition: 10,000 copies were said there to have been sold “within the first week of publication”; and then in the second issue 16,000 copies were said to have been sold “within ten days of publication” (which makes six thousand copies sold in three days!). Ferguson, 9355 (miscounting advertisement leaves).
