  • Lot Description:
Weddell, James. A Voyage towards the South Pole, Performed in the years 1822 – 24
Containing an examination of the Antarctic Sea… Second edition, with observations on the probability of reaching the South Pole, and an account of a second voyage performed by the Beaufoy, Captain Brisbane, in the same seas… and a Visit to Tierra del Fuego, with a particular account of the inhabitants… Octavo, with a coloured frontispiece, two folding coloured plates of panoramas, four plates, two diagrams, and eight charts (some folding), bound in dark blue morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. London, Longman, 1827.
  • Notes:
Second and better edition: in the course of his two-year sealing expedition, Weddell reached further south than any explorer before him, discovering the Weddell Sea and several Antarctic islands. His name is commemorated by two of his discoveries: the Weddell Sea and the Weddell seal (Leptonychotes Weddelli). The second edition includes Weddell’s observations on the South Pole and the account of the Beaufoy’s second voyage under Matthew Brisbane in the same seas, which were not in the first edition of 1824. Abbey, 609; Renard, 1681; Rosove, 345.B1; Spence 1248.
