Lot Description:Strzelecki, Count Paul Edmond de. Physical Description of New South Wales and Van Diemen’s Land
Accompanied by a Geological Map, Sections, and Diagrams, and Figures of the organic remains. Octavo, with handcoloured folding map, three tinted lithographs, 19 plain plates (one folding), a fine copy, uncut (and unopened) in the original cloth. London, Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1845. -
Notes:First edition: presentation copy inscribed “From the Author” at the head of the title. The scientific narrative of Strzelecki’s 7000-mile excursion on foot with James Macarthur and a small party through New South Wales, across the Australian Alps into Gippsland, and then into Van Diemen’s Land. This book, for which Strzelecki received the Founder’s medal of the Royal Geographical Society in London, was the first extensive scientific survey of any part of Australia and laid the foundation of Australian palaeontology. The geological map, bound here as frontispiece, was one of the earliest and most ambitious attempts to prepare a geological map of any part of the continent. Ferguson overlooks the view of “Ben Nevis and Ben Lomond” (at p. 164) and the portrait of “Jemmy” (at p. 333). Ferguson, 4168 (omitting two plates); Forbes, 1568; Richards, 117.
