Lot Description:Stoney, Henry Butler. A Residence in Tasmania: with a descriptive tour through the island
from Macquarie Harbour to Circular Head. Octavo, with tinted lithographed frontispiece, seven full-page plates and a double-page map, vignette on the title, and five in the text, the rare deluxe issue in publisher’s dark green morocco, all edges gilt, the spine and both boards ornately gilt, the spine decoratively lettered in gilt, little rubbed. London, Smith, Elder, 1856. -
Notes:First London and first illustrated edition: a very good association copy, with the bookplate of George Butler Stoney and the signature of Sara Stoney on the title-page. Stoney, a captain in the 99th Regiment, spent a year in Tasmania during the 1850s. His informative account of the island colony is of historical importance, with useful descriptions of the settlements, conditions and penal stations. It is particularly well illustrated with lithographs and wood engravings of Hobart and the surrounding countryside. “A very attractively produced book, containing much information about the settlements and conditions of Tasmania, particularly on the then little known West coast” (Ferguson). Ferguson, 16295.
