Lot Description:Mitchell, Thomas Livingstone. Journal of an Expedition into the Interior of Tropical Australia
in search of a route from Sydney to the Gulf of Carpentaria. Octavo, with a frontispiece and eleven plates, seven maps (four folding), and with the 32-page catalogue dated October 1847 after the text found in the first issue; entirely uncut, bound in the bright original red cloth, spine with gilt vignette, pale yellow china clay endpapers lined white, the top of the spine with neat repairs, with collector’s stamp of E. Angas Johnson. London, Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1848. -
Notes:First edition, first issue. This was Mitchell’s full narrative of his fourth and last expedition. Although not successful in its primary objectives, this year-long expedition into tropical Australia opened up large tracts of previously unknown territory and was the first detailed exploration of what would become the colony of Queensland. The fine lithographed plates after Mitchell’s own drawings show his work as a topographical artist at its best. Ferguson, 4828; Richards, 102; Wantrup, 129.
