Lot Description:Jameson, R.G. New Zealand, South Australia and New South Wales: a record of recent travels in these colonies
with especial reference to emigration and the advantageous employment of labour and capital. Octavo, with two folding maps and two plates, original cloth. London, Smith, Elder, and Co., 1842. -
Notes:First issue of the first edition: Published late in 1841 with the title-page postdated 1842, in accordance with quite strictly observed contemporary British publishing practice for books issued in the last quarter of a calendar year. Hocken naïvely assumed, on the basis of October 1841 ‘reviews’, that an issue dated 1842 could not be the first, instead describing a secondary variant with undated cancel title-page as the first – even his physical description of this later issue is severely at fault, as noted by Bagnall. Ferguson, who is unquestioningly followed by both Bagnall and Ford, allowed himself to be misled by Hocken and repeats this error (Ferguson, 3232). This is a small point but it is there to be made. Bagnall, 2863; Ferguson, 3428; Ford, 1011; Hocken, p. 95 (but see above).
