  • Lot Description:
Gould, John and Elizabeth. A Synopsis of the Birds of Australia, and the Adjacent Islands…
Large octavo, with in total 73 handcoloured lithographed plates by Elizabeth Gould, each plate accompanied by a leaf of text, occasional foxing and small stain in the margin of a few plates, in the familiar publisher’s binding of (little rubbed) half green morocco and cloth boards, spine with raised bands and richly gilt in compartments, all edges gilt, with ownership signature of pastoralist and politician W.H. Suttor at the top of the title-page and a ms index in his hand on the endpaper. London, The Author, 1837-8.
  • Notes:
This is one of the few illustrated works by John and Elizabeth Gould not to be issued in folio format. The Synopsis also represents Gould’s first venture into the study of Australian birds. It was published at the same time as his abandoned Birds of Australia and the Adjacent Islands of 1837-8 and forms a companion to it. The last two parts were published just before Gould departed for Australia, intending on his return to continue this series of synopses. This plan was abandoned in favour of his greatest work, The Birds of Australia. The Synopsis is a remarkable series of head studies of 199 species of Australian birds, represented in beautifully handcoloured plates and accompanying text, including many hitherto unknown species. Alan McEvey has argued persuasively that Elizabeth Gould alone was responsible for the finished drawings and many of the best plates are quite striking, with an almost three-dimensional quality. Ayer/Zimmer, 254; Casey Wood, 364; Ferguson, 2271; Fine Bird Books, 101; Nissen IVB, 382; Nissen SVB, 198; Sauer, 5.
