  • Lot Description:
Fraser, Eliza. Narrative of the Capture, Sufferings, and Miraculous Escape of Mrs. Eliza Fraser
Wife of the late Captain Fraser, commander of the ship Sterling [sic] Castle, which was wrecked on 25th May… on Eliza Reef, on her passage from New South Wales to Liverpool… Duodecimo in fours, pp. 24, with full-page wood-engraved illustration as frontispiece, wood-engraved vignette on the title, short tear in the margin of two leaves, other general use, a much-handled copy sewn in old plain wrappers, preserved in a quarter morocco bookform box. New York, Charles E. Webb, 1837.
  • Notes:
Rare: a sensational account of Eliza Fraser’s suffering at the hands of the Aborigines after the shipwreck of the Stirling Castle off the Queensland coast in 1835. The survivors of the wreck were savagely mistreated by the local Moreton Bay tribes. Captain Fraser and all but two other crew members were murdered before the black steward of the Stirling Castle was able to steal away in a canoe and raise the alarm in the nearby penal settlement. Like all the pamphlet material relating to the wreck of the Stirling Castle, this work is rare. Published in New York, the pamphlet is part of the ever-popular American genre of the ‘Captivity Narrative’, usually concerning the sufferings of white women at the hands of the American Indians. The lurid frontispiece woodcut and large title-page vignette show the ‘Aborigines’ as American Indians. Ferguson, 2266.
