of its Principal Streets, Public Buildings, Churches, Chapels, etc. From Drawings by Joseph Fowles. Quarto, with 40 fine copperplate engravings, with the Dedication leaf but without the uncommon leaf of Opinions of the Press found in some copies, bound in early – possibly publisher’s – cloth with leather label on the front board, a.l.s. by Sir John Ferguson loosely enclosed relating in part to this book. Sydney, Printed by D. Wall and Published by The Author, [1848 – 1849].
  • Notes:
Rare: a very elusive work, the most comprehensive topographical account of early Sydney street architecture published in the nineteenth century, Fowles’s volume was published in twenty fortnightly parts over 1848 and 1849, and then issued in one collective volume. The present set shows stab-holes throughout and was probably bound from the parts issue. “Fowles is firmly within the tradition of urban topography that started with John Eyre and continued with Earle, Austin, Carmichael, Prout and Conrad Martens. But he is in some ways apart from them, for Fowles’s professed aim and practice was to ‘represent Sydney as it really is’. His Sydney sketches are not works of bold artistry like those of Prout and Martens, nor primitive and anecdotal like those of Austin and Carmichael. They represent with classical simplicity, in clean, sharp lines the city streets, buildings and interiors of a growing and thriving town in precise architectural detail” (Wantrup). While Morton Herman wrote that “the Sydney he records was a lovely colonial town of clean, chaste Georgian architecture. Whole streets were pleasant compositions of harmonious buildings, few of them over three stories high, all clearly designed, well mannered and an orderly delight to the eye...”. Ferguson, 4766 or 4955; Wantrup, 235a or 235b.
