Lot Description:Bischoff, James. Sketch of the History of Van Diemen’s Land, illustrated by a map of the island
and an account of the Van Diemen’s Land Company. Octavo, with two plates and a folding handcoloured Arrowsmith map, and an additional map (see below), original cloth-backed boards with printed spine label, the copy of Robert Carl Sticht with bookplate and pencilled initials. London, John Richardson, 1832. -
Notes:First edition: with an added map of “North-west quarter of Van Diemen’s Land, including the grants of land belonging to the Van Diemen’s Land Company” supplied by a former owner (probably Sticht). Published for the benefit of investors in the Van Diemen’s Land Company, Bischoff’s important work provides an excellent and detailed picture of Van Diemen’s Land in the third decade of settlement. Importantly he reprints a number of the Company’s rare early annual reports, including the highly important and extremely rare Third Report of 1828, in which the journals of the Company’s explorers, Alexander Goldie, Henry Hellyer, and Joseph Fossey were published in full. Ferguson, 1517; Richards, 96; Wantrup, 148.
