Lot Description:Beechey, Captain Frederick et alii. The Zoology of Captain Beechey’s Voyage
compiled from the Collections and Notes made by Captain Beechey, the Officers and Naturalist of the Expedition, during a Voyage to the Pacific and Behring’s Straits performed in His Majesty’s Ship Blossom… in the years 1825, 26, 27 and 28. Quarto, pp. xii, 12 (last blank) + 9*-14* (last blank), [2] (blank) + 13 – 180 (i.e. pp. 188 in total) + 44 handcoloured plates (some folding), and three handcoloured geological maps, bound with the half-title in half morocco of the period, rebacked retaining the original spine, top edge gilt. London, Henry G. Bohn, 1839. -
Notes:Very rare: an important scientific work, noted for the high quality of its handcoloured plates (the two plates of mammals and twelve of birds by the great Edward Lear; others by G.B. and J.D.C. Sowerby, and J.C. Zeitter, with most by Zeiter). The Zoology is based on the natural history collections and observations made during the Blossom’s four-year voyage to the Pacific and Bering’s Strait and is a section of the official voyage publication “Published under the authority of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty”. An exceptional group of naturalists contributed to the work: Mammalia by Sir John Richardson, Ornithology by Nicholas A. Vigors, Fishes by George T. Lay and Edward T. Bennett, Crustacea by Richard Owen, Geology by William Buckland, Reptiles by John Edward Gray, who also contributed the section on Batrachians, and on Molluscous Animals and their Shells. Considering the magnitude of his contribution, Gray is perhaps hard done by when Beechey blames him in the introduction for causing an eight-year delay in publication. Anker, 517; Ayer-Zimmer, 51; Casey-Wood, 229; Fine Bird Books, 77; Ferguson, 2170 (omitting in error the asterisked pages 9*-14* and the following blank); Forbes, 1176; Hill 2, 96; Lada-Mocarski, 105; Nissen IVB, 961; Nissen ZBI, 285; Sabin, 71032.
