  • Lot Description:
Tench, Watkin.
Octavo, with folding map (at page 8), with the half-title, early browning, bound in modern calf. Paris, Letellier, 1789. French edition of the first eye-witness account of the settlement; one of two French editions published in 1789 (no priority established).
  • Notes:
The present edition is printed in larger type and is substantially longer, with an 86-page appendix entitled “Récit historique de la découverte de la Nouvelle Hollande et du nouveau Pays de Galles Méridional”. This essay is possibly by Charles Pougens, who is acknowledged as translator of the other 1789 French edition and who would publish an extensively annotated translation of John White’s Journal. It has been argued that the anonymous French writer’s analysis of the settlement is important evidence in the historical debate about the decision to settle New South Wales. The present copy includes the very rare folding map, “Carte de la Baye Botanique et des Havres Adjacens sur la Côte du Nouveau Pays de Galles Méridional”. This is not listed in the table of contents and is not present in most copies. It is noted by Ferguson in only one copy and Du Rietz in the Kroepelien copy suggests that it may have been issued after publication. Davidson, p. 75; Ferguson, 53 (not calling for a map but noting it in a footnote and locating one copy only); Hill 2, 1686 (without map); Kroepelien, 1280 (describing a copy with the map but suggesting, perhaps tendentiously, that it is not called for).
