Lot Description:Parker, Mary Ann. A Voyage round the World, in the Gorgon Man of War, Captain John Parker.
Performed and written by his widow; for the advantage of a numerous family. Dedicated, by permission, to Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales. Octavo, a touch of foxing, completely uncut, bound with the terminal leaf of integral advertisements, in later morocco. London, Printed by John Nichols and sold by Mr Debrett, 1795. -
Notes:First edition: Mary Anne Parker’s rare account is one of the first eye-witness accounts of Australia by a private individual – earlier accounts were by officials – and the first account of the colony written by a woman. Mary Ann Parker, wife of the captain, John Parker, sailed to New South Wales on H.M.S. Gorgon, which accompanied the Third Fleet to New South Wales in 1791 and which brought additional stores to the starving settlement following the loss of the store-ship Guardian the previous year. This is also the earliest first-hand account of a circumnavigation by an English woman. She “describes in detail her life at Port Jackson and makes some perceptive comments on the transportation system and on the economic potential of the colony. As an honoured guest, she reveals the informal side of Governor Phillip who breakfasted with her on board the Gorgon and invited her to share his table on shore. An educated woman typical of her day, she includes a sensitive section on the Aborigines as well as much on the flora and fauna she saw on her visits ashore” (Wantrup). Her remarks on the development of the colony include a discussion of “the propriety of establishing a whale-fishery on the coast of New Holland”. Ferguson, 229 (not noting the integral advertisement leaf); Hill 2, 1303; Wantrup, 24.
