Octavo, with five maps (four folding), with errata and three pages of advertisements on four terminal leaves, pale damp marks, bound in period-style panelled calf, contrasting spine label. -
Notes:The rare first edition of Dampier’s first work. The New Voyage includes Dampier’s landing in Western Australia, the first landfall on the Australian continent by an Englishman, when in January 1688, “being now clear of all the Islands, we stood off South, intending to touch at New Holland, a part of Terra Australis Incognita, to see what the country would afford us... New Holland is a very large tract of Land.” Although they remained only a very short time, they made a survey of the north-west coast near King Sound. Before Cook, the western coast of New Holland was still considered part of the mythical great southern landmass, Terra Australis Incognita. Dampier observes, however: “It is not yet determined whether it is an island or a main continent; but I am certain that it joyns neither to Asia, Africa, nor America…”. Dampier’s account of his visit includes a long description of the Aborigines, whom he considered “the miserablest people in the world.” The folding “Map of the East Indies” shows a large part of the north west coast of Australia and shows where the expedition stopped on their voyage back to the East Indies. Hill 2, 417 (but second edition only).
