    fait sur les vaisseaux de roi l’Aventure & la Résolution écrit par James Cook... dans lequel on a inséré la relation du Capitaine Furneaux, & celle de MM. Forster… Six volumes octavo and a quarto atlas volume with 66 engraved maps, portraits, and plates (most folding), text volumes bound in half vellum of the period, the atlas volume in original stiffened paste-paper wrappers, now preserved in a half vellum bookform box to match the text. Paris, Hôtel de Thou, 1778.

    A handsome set of the first French appearance of Cook’s great second voyage, originally written and prepared for publication by Cook himself. In this French edition translated by Suard, the Forster account has been incorporated throughout. Geographically the most important of Cook’s three voyages on which he entered the Antarctic circle for the first time and either discovered or revisited many of the islands, including New Caledonia, Palmerston and Norfolk Islands, Easter Island, the Marquesas, New Hebrides, Tonga, the South Sandwich Islands and South Georgia.
