Lot Description:A 1916 silver cased WWI Trench wristwatch
the circular silver case hallmarked Birmingham 1916, the black dial with fluorescent Arabic numerals, subsidiary dial, working, no strap. Note: The Great War was the first time that military men wore wristwatches, allowing for greater ease in time telling and execution of orders from remote field headquarters when timing was vital. By summer 1916 it is noted that a ‘proper wristwatch’ was the epitome of style for a newly commissioned officer, the fashion quickly spread to the wider society. -
