    A French WWI Lebel Bayonet
France adopted the Lebel repeating rifle in 1886, an epee bayonet designed by Colonel Capdeveille being adopted for the rifle at the same time. The bayonet is an unusual design, for its epee spike (knife bayonets predominating designs at this time), and also for its unusual rotating collar locking device. In 1893 the press stud for the rotating collar was changed, the quillion was removed in 1916, and in 1935 the blade was shortened.
