  • Notes:
John Kelly is a painter, sculptor, printmaker and writer, who came to international prominence with a series of large-scale bronze sculptures featuring black and white cows arranged in a variety of situations and articulated poses, that are both surreal and humourous. As an artist he is interested in pictorial elements illustrating philosophical concepts, and the use of conceptual reversals and visual puns. He is especially noted for his ironic treatment of certain Australian legends, 'deconstructing' them with wit and élan. Kelly now lives in West Cork, Ireland, but grew up in Australia after his parents - Irish father and English mother, immigrated to Melbourne from Bristol in 1965, the year of his birth. Kelly studied painting at RMIT University, completing a Masters of Art in 1995, and in that year he was awarded the Anne and Gordon Samstag scholarship, enabling him to travel to London where he studied as an Affiliate student at the Slade from 1995-97. In November 1997 at the Piccadilly Gallery, London, Kelly exhibited a group of paintings that focused on the Australian legend Phar Lap, the champion thoroughbred racehorse that became a symbol of hope in the Depression era. After his death in 1932 the horse's body was literally 'deconstructed' with his hide being placed on display at Melbourne Museum, his heart going to the National Museum in Canberra and his skeleton to New Zealand. John Kelly's paintings likewise take all kinds of liberties with the image of Phar Lap - chopping him in half, having him fall on his back, showing him being lifted in a crate, and in Dead Horse in the Slade Lift 1997 stacked sideways in an elevator.
