• Notes:
  From the time that the Melbourne impresario curator Paul Taylor included Dale Frank in the exhibition Tall Poppies at the University Gallery (University of Melbourne) in 1983, Frank has maintained a highly significant career as an international artist while also living and exhibiting in Australia. The assured boldness and daring accomplishment of his early textural paintings and large graphite drawings with their swirling rhythms of paint or line, that seemed akin to intense mindscapes of pulsating, psychological power, has been consistently maintained by Frank in a highly productive output over the last three decades. His more recent paintings such as Gretina Bushy Park Glenora 2006, featuring pools of coloured varnish, oil or resin are sumptuous works, palpable in their physicality and sense of fluid movement. Indeed, the thick viscosity of the poured and pulled paint at times seems to test the limits of gravity, and it is this tension that adds an essence of 'frisson' to the viewer's experience - just as nineteenth century Romantic painters sought to find in the 'sublime'. The titles of Frank's paintings are as abstract as the works themselves, they can be ironic, poetic or in this case, a location in Tasmania; and in knowing this the viewer is freed to enjoy the painting's sheer breathtaking beauty - its passages of colour and textures, and ultimately its 'sublimity'.
