Notes:Gwyn Hanssen Pigott achieved international recognition as AustraliaÕs most distinguished potter with-in her lifetime, receiving an Order of Australia in 2002. She was renowned for her carefully orchestrated still-life groupings and steadfast dedication to technical virtuosity. Throughout her long career spaning over 50 years, Gwyn lived and worked between Australia, Britain and France predominantly- investing all elements of her life into her pottery. This allowed her creations to become a sensory, emotional and intellectual expression of her experiences. Gwyn was always equally a student, teacher and artist. GwynÕs formative years were influenced greatly by the Kent Collection of Chinese and Korean ceramics housed at the National Gallery of Victoria. The functionality and subtly transient aspects of GwynÕs works pay tribute to these early inspirations, Senior Curator of Asian Art at the NGV, Mae Anna Pang noted; Gwyn Hanssen Pigott shares with Kent and the Chinese a spiritual connection with nature. Her vases and bowls are reminiscent of the mountain ranges of Australia and the eucalyptus trees. Her bluish glazes are evocative of the subtle nuances of the luminous lights of the blue sky and the sea, which are elusive and continuously changing - a distillation of nature.1 GwynÕs artistÕs statement for her show Confrontations in 1993 seems a precursor and a whisper of her later work Echo 1998; ÔIf I am not making single, simple, footless bowls, I am making groups of É. as many as eleven. I like what happens to more than one. Volumes change into line, as our eye perambulates. Interior colours float from thin rims, making an echo.Õ?2? By the 1990s GwynÕs trails and still-life assemblages were well resolved, she continues eloquently, explaining what makes these groupings simple, unassuming and refined; ÔKinship of form, tone, line, remembrance brings the pots together; ah, but itÕs the graceful empty open space that locks them there. We, of course, could change all that in a flash - drink from the cup, cup the bowl, pour the bottle and that would be perfectly all right. Lovely even. Pleasure. For a while.Õ?3 1 Mae Anna Pang, Gwyn Hanssen Pigott and The Herbert Wake Kent Collection of Chinese Art: A Spiritual Connection, essay included in Gwyn Hanssen Pigott: A Survey 1955 - 2005, Jason Smith, The National Gallery of Victoria, 2005, p. 92; 2 Gwyn Hanssen Pigott, artistÕs statement, Confrontations, Ivan Dougherty Gallery, 1993 ; 3 Gwyn Hanssen Pigott, artistÕs statement, Confrontations, Ivan Dougherty Gallery, 1993
