  Peter Clarke has practiced as one of AustraliaÕs most respected abstract painters since the 1960Õs as well as being a highly regarded art educator as lecturer and Head of the Fine Art Department at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). Since 1957 Clarke has had numerous exhibitions within Australia and abroad, including Madrid where he spent time living. This time in Spain has been the keystone for much of his work in subsequent years.1 ClarkeÕs work often focuses and develops along parallel streams of practice, working through contemporary bodies of work to explore issues of form, process and content. One series of work bouncing off another, generating new questions and possibilities making his entire folio unique. His respect for local and global concerns further informs and adds dimension and gravitas. Garden 1986, highlights the artistsÕ gestural technique and expertise with the brush. This visually engaging painting explores texture though the gestural strokes and contemplation through the use of languid lines and sepia tones. The cross section view of roots and water systems beneath the ground link upward to the surface of the earth to meet an Australian blue sky.
