  • Notes:
ÔThe imaginary realm of George McNeilÕs painting is one of the richest in contemporary art.Õ 1 As one of the founding members of the American Abstract Expressionist Movement, McNeil has enjoyed worldwide respect and global attention. In his early career he experimented with mural painting which developed into elegant, painterly canvases in the 1940Õs and 1950Õs. We see the innermost and central subject of his paintings as Ôthe human conditionÕ sensitively expressed with sweeping lines, rich textures and his choice of smouldering colours. Like his contemporaries, Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, McNeilÕs compositions are often free, powerful and dynamic but also remain rooted in traditional ideas of form and balance. After finding renewed attention during the neo Expressionist Movement of the 1980Õs, his work has become extremely sort after; ÔDisdain DiscoÕ is positioned from this important period. This energetic acrylic on canvas from 1985 is a wonderful example of the expressionist aesthetic and of the artistsÕ imaginatively rich work. The power of the central figuresÕ exuberance is shown with the bending grace of her legs with the limbs and body almost solid architectural forms, a pillar supporting the structure of the entire image. McNeil presents extraordinary skill in foreshortening here to give us the joy of the dance. 1. Carter Ratcliff, Georg McNeil: The Past Twenty Years, The Museum of Art, Florida, USA, p.2
