  • Notes:
In 1970 the American abstract painter Harvey Quaytman wrote a brief passage to explain why he had chosen to create specially shaped canvases: ÔThese forms are my way of making space for colour to be inÉ. An outrigger on a canoe isnÕt there for decorating. It is there because the water is rough.Õ?1 Quaytman delivers his own interpretation on Minimalism and Hard-Edge abstraction with his practice that sways seamlessly between two and three dimensions; a concept that is exemplified in the two works presented within this auction. His spare geometric paintings can be squarely placed alongside artists such as Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning just as easily as with his contemporaries Brice Marden. Although Quaytman died in 2002, his reputation continues to grow as the art establishment reconciles his place within the canon. Street Smart and the untitled work of 1997, are elegant examples of his structural yet compellingly pictorial spaces. They gently expose the paintings material infrastructure at the same time as delivering calming structural works. The heavy pigments and signature intersecting lines in cruciform shapes point us to examine the nature of painting of mathematics and of logic. In these works we can see that the tradition of Mondrian continues, bringing the picture beyond the fame, the wonders of the illusion of depth and of geometric balance and substance. 1 David Carrier, Paintings on Show in New York, McKee Gallery, 2014
