  • Notes:
Angela De la Cruz produces works that are grounded in the contemporary artistic manifestation of the grotesque. ÔThe crux of the grotesque aesthetic lies in its portrayal of transformation and temporal change, of the contradictory yet interconnected process of death and birth, ending and becomingÕ.1 Deconstruction and destruction followed by reconstruction and reclamation are central to de la CruzÕs artistic process. De la Cruz speaks to this subversive approach in her creation of figurative objects observing: Òthe moment I cut through the canvas I get rid of the grandiosity of paintingÓ.2 It is in this act that de la Cruz constructs a new and distinctive language of ÔpaintingÕ, challenging traditional boundaries and constraints. The works of Angela de la Cruz invite an intellectual dialogue surrounding the rudimentary and ambivalent components of daily reality. De la Cruz has exhibited extensively in both solo and group shows throughout Europe, the United Kingdom, America, Israel and Australia. Her work is housed internationally in notable public institutions including Tate Collection, England, British Council Collection, England, Contemporary Art Society, London; and nationally at the National Gallery of Victoria and Queensland Art Gallery. Following a stroke in 2005, de la Cruz remains confined to a wheelchair, however continues to produce work with the aid of assistants. 1 Katya Garcia-Anton, The Pleasures of Down Below, Anthony Wilkinson Gallery, 2001, p. 5; 2 Angela De la Cruz in Katya Garcia-AntonÕs, The Pleasures of Down Below, Anthony Wilkinson Gallery, 2001, p. 5
