  • Notes:
Scottish artist Callum Innes came to artistic prominence in the late 1980Õs and has since achieved widespread international critical acclaim as one of the most significant abstract painters of his generation. Innes was short-listed for the Turner and Jerwood Prizes in 1995, won the esteemed NatWest Prize for Painting in 1998 and Jerwood Prize for Painting in 2002. InnesÕ works are held in several major international public institutions including the Guggenheim, New York; National Gallery of Australia; TATE, London, and Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. Innes has successfully developed a distinctive visual language throughout his artistic career, designed through a harmonious minimalism that invites contemplative stillness within the viewer. InnesÕ purposefully economic use of geometrics, colour, gradient and paint application to a bare canvas, in the present work Exposed Painting Deep Violet 2006, is a faultless embodiment of this visual language. Marco Livingstone reflects on the introspective nature of InnesÕ work; Ôthe marks on the surface are presented as the physical traces of an experience lived and not as a representation of something seenÕ.1 Livingstone further expresses ÔHis refusal to direct the viewerÕs response should be taken not as an insistence on the muteness of the painting as a physical object, or as an emptying out of meaning, but as a way of directing the responsibility of reacting back onto the spectatorÕ.2 1 Marco Livingstone, Callum Innes: exposed paintings, Callum Innes and the Ingleby Gallery, Edinbugh, 2001, p.7; 2 Marco Livingstone, Callum Innes: exposed paintings, Callum Innes and the Ingleby Gallery, Edinbugh, 2001, p.9
