Lot Description:A rare Thomas Norman Lovatt terracotta pottery bust of ‘Te Rangi Pikanga’
finely modelled with moko to her chin, a woven cloak to her shoulders, two hei tiki to her neck, the base incised with the subject name and ‘T.N. Lovatt Temuka’. Note: Te Rangi Pikinga born c.1800 and also known as Te Pikinga or Pikinga was an extremely important figure in Ngati Apa history. She witnessed the turmoil of inter-tribal warfare in the period from 1819 through to the signing of the treaty with endemic warfare and violence, as a young woman she was captured by a Taua party lead by Te Rauparaha of Ngati Toa. Te Rauparaha’s nephew Te Rangihaeata took a fancy to Pikinga and their subsequent marriage affected a peace treaty between Ngati Apa and Ngati Toa. The marriage laid the foundations of Ngati Toa’s occupation of the Kapiti Coast. Further biographical details available. 230 x 130 x 190. -
