Notes:Requiem is part of a series of work produced by Ralph Hotere from 1973 to 1974. A requiem is a musical composition and sung mass for the dead, most apparent in the Roman Catholic Church. Each of the works in this series feature subdued colours, overlaid with a precise pinstripe pattern to convey a quiet, contemplative atmosphere. A sense of rhythm and poetic fluidity permeates the work and reveals the influence of not only the musical compositions of a requiem but Hotere’s friend and composer Anthony Watson, who passed away the same year the work was produced. The series is also pervaded with the memory of his mother, Ana Maria Hotere, resulting in a deeply personal litany of loss and grief. KATE SHAPIRO
