Lot Description:A Japanese cloisonné vase, Meiji period (1868-1912)
finely decorated within silver wires, with an eagle perched on a rock beside a large maple tree, gilt metal rim and base

Provenance:Kyutaro Abiko (1865 - 1936), founder of the Nichi Bei Shimbun (renamed The Nichi Bei Times), one of the USA's oldest and most prolific US - Japanese newspapers until its closing in 2009. His home in San Francisco was filled with pieces gifted by Japanese dignitaries, including the Emperor Meiji, of which this vase is one of those gifts.
