  STEPHENS & STOKES: “The New South Wales Calendar and General Post Office Directory, 1834.”
  with folding map, engraved title-page with view of the GPO, two folding tables, two folding plates (one hand-coloured), engraved advertisements for Sydney merchants; a very good copy in the original linen boards, original label retained. [Sydney, Stephens & Stokes, December, 1834.] Ferguson 1833.
• Notes:
  This was the third year of publication for the New South Wales Calendar, and it features an impressive roll-call of contributors. Of particular note is the engraved folding ‘Map of the Town of Sydney 1834’, engraved by Wilson from an original plan drawn by Major Thomas Mitchell, then serving as Surveyor-General of the colony. A fascinating inclusion is Phillip Parker King’s ‘Sailing Directions for the Navigation of the Inner Route. The almanac is a rare opportunity to study the skill of the local engravers and printers, while also providing a detailed picture of life in the colony, whether it is the comprehensive ‘Itinerary of Roads throughout New South Wales’ (pp. 33-133), lists of the civil and military establishment, information regarding shipping, business and public institutions, or the ‘General Post Office Directory’ containing names and addresses of nearly 10,000 Colonists. Of great charm are the engraved advertisements for local merchants J. MacNaughton, Chemist and Druggist of King Street, W. Moffatt, Bookbinder & Stationer of Pitt St. and W. Pendray, Tailor and Draper of George St.
