    VERY EARLY DEPICTITION OF A KANGAROO - SAUER, C.: “Der Hoch-Deutsch-Amerikanische Calender auf das Jahr.....1775”
    [Germantown, Pennsylvania, 1774]. Although incomplete, lacking covers and a few leaves, present is the page depicting and describing the kangaroo, “a new type of animal” which had not previously been described in words or images and which relies heavily on the report provided by “Mr Banks”. The Roo is described as having a head like a deer, lips and ears like a hare, etc. Later hard binding.
  • Notes:
    This is the first image of a kangaroo published in North America; a rather charming woodcut which appears to be based on the illustration appearing in the report of Cook’s First Voyage published in 1773.
