Notes:Born in England, Dr Louis Lawrence Smith migrated to Australia at the age of twenty-two. The son of a theatre impresario, Smith appeared to have inherited his father's entrepreneurial spirit, setting up a medical practice in Bourke Street and offering postal consulations with a fee of 1 guinea for prescriptions. Smith's rooms also included a Museum of Anatomy which was later closed on the claim of it offending taste! For many years Smith was Chairman of the Melbourne Exhibition Building and aside from his medical duties, he also became a farmer, vigneron and author, capped off with a forty year-long political career that included representing the seat of Richmond in 1871-74 and 1877-83.
