Lot Description:John. Shaw. Nielson - Heart of Spring
octavo. inscribed 'For / Mr Bertram Stevens- / this book which in verse / parallels Hilder in painting. / Mary Gilmore/ 8.8.19' to free endpaper. unidentified signature on pastedown endpaper. preliminary foxing. ocb. spine worn and sunned. gilt. The Bookfellow. Sydney. 1919. together with another copy of the same publication. (2). -
Notes:Nielson spent a great deal of his life making roads or working with stone and Mary Gilmore's recalls their first meeting as follows: '...when I saw his work-swollen hands, with the finger-nails worn to the quick by the abrading stone, I felt a stone in my heart.' Gilmore's image of Nielson's work-hardened hands forms a rather poignant contrast to the delicate palette of his verse alluded to in the inscription above.
